Catherine Hu Yen
Catherine Yen (胡家興) was born in China, grew up in Taiwan, and was educated in Taiwan, France and United States. She retired from active teaching in 2004 after 26 years of working mostly in the school environment in San Francisco as a teacher of ESL, French and Chinese, bilingual counselor, foreign language department chair, and district foreign language mentor teacher. In the professional development field, she has received extensive training in the second language acquisition theory, methodology, assessments, language and reading teaching strategies. She worked in the leadership team of the Bay Area Foreign Language Project (BAFLP) and in the committee of drafting the National Chinese Standards for K-12 language learning completed in 1999. In 2004-2005, she was one of the task force members for drafting the AP Chinese language course and exam and the project manager for the AP Chinese Participant’s Manual. Currently she serves as an AP Chinese workshop consultant and special project consultant for the San Francisco Unified School District.
Catherine Yen received her bachelor’s degree in English language and literature in Taiwan, teaching certificate from La Sorbonne, a master’s degree in French literature from Rutgers University, a master’s degree in school counseling from University of San Francisco, and teaching credentials from San Francisco State University.
