Yolanda Soliz
Yolanda Soliz teaches AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, Pre-AP Spanish III and Spanish for Heritage Speakers at Stafford High School in southwest Houston, Texas. She has taught for 31 years in the Texas public school system. She also teaches at Houston Community College. Yolanda has been a College Board endorsed AP Spanish consultant for 10 years and is a reader for the AP Spanish Literature Exam. She has a Master’s Degree in Spanish from the University of Houston University Park. She is past president of the Texas Foreign Language Association. She also serves as president for the Houston Brazos chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. She has presented AP Spanish sessions and workshops at TFLA, SWCOLT and ACTFL. In October 2006 she presented the AP Spanish Literature curriculum to instructors from Venezuela and Colombia at the Colegio Internacional de Carabobo in Venezuela. Yolanda was awarded the Texas Foreign Language Association Spanish Teacher Award for 2006. She represented Texas in Las Vegas at the SWCOLT National FL Teacher of the Year competition in 2007. She has served as the Pan American Student forum Scholarship Director for 6 years.
AP Spanish Language
Participants will discuss how to begin an Advanced Placement Spanish Language program or expand an existing one. The group will examine the format and the scoring of the AP Spanish Language Exam, using materials provided by the College Board and grading criteria from ETS. Strategies and activities for increasing student proficiency in the four skills will be presented with emphasis on Reading and Listening to authentic texts, using several sources to write an essay and reading Literature. Participants will be encouraged to share a mini-lesson at the end of the week that could be implemented in a Pre-AP or AP Spanish class.
Please Note: AP Spanish Language will be taught primarily in Spanish during the 2008 Advanced Placement Summer Institute at the University Of Tulsa.
