Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Science degrees.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers three options for undergraduate students interested in the fields of chemistry or biochemistry. The B. A. degree provides the opportunity to develop a broad background in chemistry within the framework of a liberal arts education. The B.S. degrees consist of courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, writing and humanities. The curricula provide a firm foundation for graduate or advanced professional study.

The department will offer a doctoral degree beginning in the spring 2009 semester.

Computer Science

The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences offers programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science and information systems technology. The degree in computer science offers students a strong foundation in computer sciences and mathematics and emphasizes supporting study in the physical sciences.

The information systems technology program offers students a strong foundation in computer science together with supporting subjects selected from professional business courses.

The B.S. degree program in computer science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Engineering, and Master of Science in Engineering degrees.

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a curriculum leading to a B.S. degree. The curriculum includes a strong foundation in the electrical, system, computer, mathematical, and physical sciences. Upon successfully completing this curriculum, the electrical engineering graduate is prepared either to pursue further studies at the graduate level or to select from a wide variety of interesting and challenging professional employment opportunities.

The B.S. degree program in electrical engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The B. S. degree program requires three semesters of mathematics in calculus and/or statistics, one year of chemistry and one year of calculus-based physics. In addition, supporting courses in the sciences are required. A six-credit-hour course in field geology is required and must be taken at another university. Students graduating with a B. S. degree in Geosciences usually enter a professional career in the geosciences or further their education at the graduate level.

The B. A. degree program is a broadly-based, classical liberal arts degree that offers considerable flexibility to students interested in the Earth Sciences, but who do not necessarily want to work in the petroleum or related industries.

Mathematics

The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences offers programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science and computer information systems.

Both a B.A. and B.S. degree in mathematics are offered and provide the student with a sound foundation in mathematics.

The B.A. program encourages the study of languages and liberal arts, whereas the B.S. program emphasizes supporting study in the physical sciences and computer science.

The B.S. in applied mathematics is offered with five options: computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, business, and education. Each student must select one option and meet its requirements.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Engineering, Master of Science in Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering curriculum leads to a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. The goal of the program is to provide a high-quality education that prepares students for responsible and productive careers and for life-long learning. Consistent with the goal are several objectives. Mechanical Engineering graduates should demonstrate:

  • A sound foundation in both the thermal and mechanical systems areas
  • The ability to design and create sophisticated engineering systems
  • The ability to work professionally in a globally diverse environment
  • An understanding of engineering systems and the attendant reasoning skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills including the use of appropriate analytical and computational skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A commitment to life-long learning needed to perform responsibly and ethically as an active engineering professional or other productive member of society

Petroleum Engineering

The Department of Petroleum offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Engineering, Master of Science in Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering offers a curriculum leading to the B.S. degree. The objective of the undergraduate program is to provide basic and applied knowledge in petroleum engineering, with equal emphasis on drilling and completion, production and reservoir areas using the fundamental building blocks of mathematics, physical and engineering sciences.

Specific program objectives include:

  • To produce a petroleum engineer who is capable of working as a drilling and completions, productio or reservoir engineer
  • To develop the ability to analyze, synthesize, and design open-ended petroleum engineering systems using available engineering tools, understand the associated uncertainties, and evaluate the economic and social impact
  • to develop the ability to synthesize inputs from various sources and articulate technical concepts

Physics and Engineering Physics

The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Science in Engineering degrees.

The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics offers programs leading to the B.S. and B.A. degrees in physics, and to the B.S. in Engineering Physics degree. All programs provide a critical core understanding of physics and culminate in a two-semester senior thesis.

The B. A. degree in physics prescribes a thorough undergraduate physics curriculum while retaining flexibility to engage in a breadth of courses in the arts and sciences. This degree option is particularly well suited as part of an education or pre-medical program.

The B.S. degree in physics provides a strong foundation in physics and mathematics in preparation for a technical or scientific career. The B.S. degree in physics provides a broad based technical major and is very adaptable for students in pre-professional programs and for education majors.

The goal of the B.S. in Engineering Physics program is to provide a thorough program in physics and engineering sciences that prepares students for careers in technical fields in industry, higher education, and for life-long learning.

Engineering physics graduates should demonstrate:

  • Sound knowledge of physics and engineering sciences
  • The ability to use theoretical and experimental training to solve practical engineering problems
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
