Last fall, TU President Steadman Upham and Graduate School Dean Janet Haggerty launched the Bellwether Fellowship program to strengthen TU’s doctoral programs. The Bellwether Fellowships assist doctoral candidates in the timely completion of their degree. The selected fellowship recipients are expected to be leaders in their respective disciplines and trendsetters for The University of Tulsa doctoral degree. The recipients will receive awards as either an academic year award up to 21 credits in tuition, a stipend of $12,000 for 12 months, and University housing for up to 12 months, or a summer bridging award up to 3 credits of tuition, $2,500 stipend, and University housing for the summer semester.
To be eligible for an award, a doctoral student must be admitted to candidacy (passed all qualifying or comprehensive exams and successfully defended the prospectus or dissertation proposal) and must demonstrate a good track record with respect to timely completion of Ph.D. milestones. Candidates for the award are expected to be in the writing stage of their dissertation work with the majority of the research (and data collection where applicable) completed. Fellowships are awarded for up to one year.
Since the Bellwether Fellowship program is designed for full-time doctoral candidates who are working full time toward the completion of degree requirements, participants may not receive payment for any work on or off campus during the Fellowship period except with the written permission of the Dean of the Graduate School. These fellowships are intended to provide an opportunity for doctoral candidates to focus on their dissertations without other work commitments.
This semester marks the awarding of the first Bellwether Fellowships. Sixteen fellowships were awarded for the 2007-2008 academic year, with representatives from a variety of doctoral programs. The fellowship takes its name from the definition of bellwether, which signifies the leadership these students will provide in their respective disciplines. The 2007-2008 Bellwether Fellows are:

Please join us in congratulating these students on their achievement and remember that applications for the 2008-2009 Bellwether Fellowships are due by January 15, 2008.
