Karl Sharrah successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation "Comparative Study of the Sedimentology and Provenance of the Atoka Formation in the Frontal Ouachita Thrust Belt, Oklahoma"  and has graduated.  He will be working for Exxon in Houston.  Karl's dissertation represents a first attempt to use Zircon geochemistry and radiometric dating to study the complex sourcing of the Atoka Formation in the Ouachitas.

Catherine Webster presented the results of her M.S. thesis at the South Central Geological Society of America (GSA) meeting in Norman, and has submitted an abstract to present her work at the national meeting of GSA this fall in Philadelphia.  She will defend her thesis "Biogeochemical Study of Naturally Occurring Acid Drainage in the Peekaboo Gulch Region of the Grizzly Peak Caldera, Sawatch Range in Chaffee County Colorado" on August 10. Her work represents the first study of its kind in alpine biogeosciences and has opened the door for significant further research.

Irene DaRocha successfully defended her M.S. thesis "Comparative 3-D Seismic Interpretation Using Amplitude, Coherence, and SPICE in the West Cameron Area, Gulf of Mexico" in March.  Irene is working as an exploration geophysicist with Chesapeake Energy in Oklahoma City. Irene's work represents the first detailed study of 3-D seismic data using the SPICE attribute.  Her work validated the use of SPICE in a detailed exploration study.

Dr. Peter Michael, Geosciences Graduate Program Advisor, led an arctic expedition this summer to the Gakeel Ridge, the mid-ocean ridge located three miles below the surface of the Arctic Ocean.  The expedition was a great success and the students he invited to participate had a very interesting and educational experience.

Welcome Back, Dr. Michael!
