BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

While our students are encouraged to pursue activities that will benefit their professional standing, we are always pleased to see students taking an active interest in our community through volunteer projects as well.  Many of our students are active volunteers in the community, but special attention should be paid to the work of Angela Lawrence, a third-year MBA student.

Last year, Angela started a tutoring program for local elementary students called BRIGHT Tutoring.  The program is a free tutoring service to provide struggling students with more personal attention and depends on support from the community through donations of time and funds.  To get the program off the ground, Angela and her partner, Debbie Hammontree, have focused primarily on advertising their services to Bryant Elementary.  They have attended staff meetings to present information about their services and ask teachers to refer students they felt could benefit from the extra attention.  Into the middle of their second year, BRIGHT Tutoring now sees 10-15 students a week visiting BRIGHT Tutoring a week, the program is off to an excellent start and continues to grow in size and scope.

Since BRIGHT Tutoring has received such a good response from the community, Angela has been able to secure reliable funding, materials, and meeting space in a relatively short period of time.  The East Tulsa Church of God allows Angela to use their facilities for tutoring sessions during the week.  The program was also recently allocated grant funds from the Zarrow Foundation, which allowed them to purchase some computers and additional supplies.   Red Crown Credit Union has also expressed some interest in helping to purchase software and educational aids.  Angela should be congratulated on her achievement and we hope the program will continue to expand as they help more of our struggling local students.

In addition to funds and materials, BRIGHT Tutoring is also in need of additional tutors.  Last year they were able to tutor each student on a 1-to-1 ratio. It was very helpful to give each child undivided attention. However, this year they have not been able to recruit as many tutors to the program. Typically, they have around 10 tutors, so they are able to give the students much more attention than they would get in a classroom setting. Some of the tutors are volunteers from the Booker T Washington High School National Honor Society - they are able to earn service points. They also have other volunteers, such as a graduate student from TU and a few people from the church.

Angela wanted to extend an invitation to the TU Graduate Community, to see if any of our students would be interested in volunteering.

If you would like more information about the program or would like to volunteer as a student, contact Angela Lawrence at angela-lawrence@utulsa.edu

A new dual degree program will be offered to TU students beginning this semester.  The faculty of The University of Tulsa created and approved the MBA/MSF dual degree program just last Fall.  There are already 2 new students in the program and we only expect that this number will grow quickly!

An MBA/MSF degree combines in-depth finance knowledge with a broad business curriculum resulting in a competitive edge that gives graduates a leg up on their peers. It allows students to simultaneously earn both degrees.  The streamlined curriculum enables completion of both degrees in less time than separately pursuing each one.

Students are allowed to choose their finance option:  Corporate Finance, Risk Management or Portfolio Management.  The program can be completed in as few as 55 hours.  To learn more about the curriculum, go to
