ARTText Box: Vanessa Somerville (MFA 2008) recently opened a local, non-profit gallery dubbed SELF to give up-and-coming Tulsa artists a chance to display their work in a professional, gallery setting. Since the gallery’s grand opening in September 2006, its effect on the local art community has been noticeable.

Vanessa strives to encourage young artists in the community by giving them a supportive environment in which to display their creative endeavors. She also takes an active interest in helping young artists to start compiling portfolios of work, preparing them for future professional endeavors.

Artists and gallery visitors alike appreciate her efforts, ensuring that the SELF Gallery will be around to support young artists for quite some time. Business is flourishing and the gallery is already booked with upcoming shows through October of this year.

The SELF Gallery is located at
2012 E. 11th St.
(between Lewis & Utica on 11th)

The School of Art’s faculty and students continued to excel over the past semester:

Mark Lewis, Applied Associate Professor of Art, was one of five artists chosen to create art work for the new Tulsa Convention Center.   An example of his past artwork may by seen to the right.

M. Teresa Valero, Applied Associate Professor of Art/Graphic Design, had an exhibition at the Syrian-Arabic Center in Madrid Spain in the Spring of 2006. The show titled Libano y Siria La Belleza del Oriente (The Levant: Lebanon and Syria through Western Eyes) ran from March 13-30. The show compiled more than 40 images that documented the people and their lives from both countries. Prior to this exhibition traveling throughout Syria, it was shown at the OSU Tulsa center.

Nicki Wood (2006 MFA Graduate)  Received a residency at the St. Petersburg Clay Company in St. Petersburg, FL.  The Resident Artist Program at SPCC is designed to enhance and further the educational experience of clay artists seeking to be recognized in the professional realm. Its premises are to provide pre-professional emerging artists time and facilities to develop both their work and acumen in the art world, and provide them with the real-world experience of juggling the demands of running a major clay art facility while supporting themselves and concentrating on their personal artwork. It also supports the educational and community functions of SPCC.
