Institutional Biosafety Committee Training

Federal Guidelines established by the National Institute of Health, require that institutions conducting or sponsoring research using recombinant DNA molecules or synthetic nucleic acid molecules covered by the NIH Guidelines, be responsible for:

  • Ensuring that the IBC has adequate expertise and training (using ad hocconsultants as necessary); and
  • Providing appropriate training for the IBC Chair and members, principal investigators (PI), and laboratory staff

The Institutional Biosafety Committee Chair is responsible for ensuring that IBC members are appropriately trained. The Principal Investigator is responsible for ensuring that laboratory staff are appropriately trained. The institution is responsible for ensuring that the Principal Investigator has sufficient training, however, this responsibility may be delegated to the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

The University of Tulsa has an institutional account with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program). CITI provides high quality, peer-reviewed, web-based educational courses in research, ethics, regulatory oversight, responsible conduct of research, research administration, and other to its member organizations and individual learners.  Principal Investigators are responsible for checking with their academic college and department for additional training and other requirements needed to conduct research and for the use of the laboratories.

Before submitting a TU IBC application, the Principal Investigator (PI) and any Co-PIs and research staff listed on the TU IBC Application Form, must have current IBC training completion certificates for the following CITI courses:

  1. “Training for Investigators, Staff and Students Handling Biohazards” course
  2. “NIH rDNA Guidelines” course

TU IBC course completion certificates must be included with the TU IBC Application submission paperwork.

You may click on the step-by-step instructions for assistance in registering on CITI and adding the correct TU IBC training courses to your CITI Program.org profile page.
