Dean of Engineering and Natural Sciences passes away
Tuesday, February 21, 2012
It is with deep sadness that The University of Tulsa announces that Steven J. Bellovich, dean of TU College of Engineering and Natural Sciences, died Tuesday at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. His wife, Janet, was with him.
Bellovich, 67, joined the TU faculty in 1972 as an assistant professor of earth sciences. He was appointed dean of the college in 1995 and continued to teach as an associate professor of geosciences throughout his time as dean. He also maintained a number of professional affiliations, including the Association of American Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education and the American Society for Engineering Education.
Bellovich was a talented administrator, teacher and mentor who cared deeply about students and met the challenges of the deanship with collegiality, clarity of vision and decisive leadership.
Bellovich led the college during TU’s recent chapter of growth and development, including the construction of two state-of-the-art buildings – J. Newton Rayzor Hall and Stephenson Hall – that will serve students and faculty for generations.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Resurrection, 4804 South Fulton Avenue. A reception will follow from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at The University of Tulsa. The reception will be held in the ONEOK Suite on the west side of H.A. Chapman Stadium.
All members of the TU family – students, faculty and staff – are invited to the reception.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Bellovich has asked that donations be made to the Dean Steven J. Bellovich Memorial Scholarship Fund at TU. Checks may be mailed to The University of Tulsa, Office of Development, 800 South Tucker Drive, Tulsa, OK 74104. Please note "Bellovich Memorial" on all correspondence.
