Tulsa student-athletes garner overall 3.121 GPA to unseat six-year reign by Rice; Tulsa rowing team recognized as a Sport Academic winner, as well.
The University of Tulsa has earned perhaps the most prestigious honor that Conference USA awards during the academic year: the Institutional Excellence Award. It is the first time that TU has won the award since joining the league, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky said.
The Institutional Excellence Award is given to the C-USA university with the highest grade-point average during the academic year for all student-athletes in conference-sponsored sports. In 2011-12, Tulsa student-athletes combined for an annual GPA of 3.121, ending Rice’s six-year run as the Institutional Excellence recipient. Rice, Memphis and UTEP student-athletes combined for a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better last school year.
"This is an outstanding accomplishment by our student-athletes," said TU Director of Athletics Ross Parmley. "The success on the playing field with winning eight conference championships during the 2011-12 academic year, and now adding this most prestigious academic award reconfirms our athletic mission.
"Our student-athletes not only have an opportunity to compete at the highest level while making progress toward their degree, but they are accomplishing these goals emphatically with winning championships and achieving high marks in the classroom," added Parmley. "I congratulate our student-athletes, coaches and our academic services staff for their tremendous efforts in reaching this notable achievement."
Conference officials also announced that the Golden Hurricane women’s rowing team captured the 2011-12 Sport Academic Award, which is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA. In just the third year that C-USA has recognized rowing as a conference sport, TU women rowers have earned the sport academic award for the second time. Tulsa’s rowing team posted an overall 3.343 GPA in 2011-12. Since joining Conference USA in 2005-06, Tulsa has won the sport academic award 13 times.
