The Honorable Layn R. Phillips (BS '74, JD '77) served as the commencement keynote speaker. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Phillips is a proud alumnus who attended TU on a NCAA tennis scholarship and graduated with honors from the Department of Economics.
Phillips attended The University of Tulsa College of Law, graduating in 1977 and finishing second in his law school class. He served as managing editor of the Tulsa Law Review and won the Robert Butler Award for Outstanding Legal Writing.
Phillips is a former United States Attorney, and former United States District Judge. He held both positions pursuant to appointments from President Ronald Reagan. Judge Phillips joined the Los Angeles-based law firm Irell & Manella LLP as a partner in 1991. His practice today involves the resolution of complex business disputes.
