Mechanical engineering senior receives 2023 Pactiv Evergreen Scholarship

Vincent Ume-Ezeoke, senior mechanical engineering student in The University of Tulsa’s College of Engineering & Computer Science, has been awarded a 2023 Pactiv Evergreen Scholarship in partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). He received this honor by essay submission and maintaining an impressive grade-point average.

Ume-Ezeoke’s essay touched on his passion for sustainability. He aspires to own an aircraft company where he can design and manufacture sustainable aircraft. The Pactiv Evergreen Scholarship not only supports a promising student but also invests in a visionary’s dream for sustainable aerospace solutions. “Vincent is one of the most outstanding students I have had the pleasure of teaching,” said John Henshaw, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Last year, Ume-Ezeoke was working two part-time engineering jobs in support of his education. “Now, with the scholarship, I’m able to advance my goals and visualize my future of owning my own company,” he said.

Ume-Ezeoke is the team lead for a group of seven TU mechanical engineering seniors who are designing, building, and flying a remote-controlled plane with a 15-foot wingspan. The team will go to Los Angeles in April to test their airplane design against 70 universities in the SAE Aero Design West competition.

The NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE, founded in 1975, supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology. With more than 600 chapters and more than 24,000 active members in the United States and abroad, NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
