Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics
The B.S. in applied mathematics is offered with five options: computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, business, and education. Each student must select one option and meet its requirements. The options provide a field of application for the mathematics student. All options carry the same mathematics requirement but differ in required support subjects. The applied mathematics program provides a solid foundation in undergraduate mathematics in preparation for graduate study or for a position in business or industry.
Please note that students are required to follow the course balance sheet on which they enrolled. This may vary from the information reflected on this site. Students should contact the College of Engineering & Natural Sciences' Advising Office for a copy of their active balance sheets.
Course requirements for all Applied Mathematics majors include:
- 33 credits of Mathematics Professional courses listed below except MATH 3553 and MATH 4083 where students can choose one of the two
- 9 hours of electives at the 3000 level and above. Elective courses are listed in Other Courses below.
- 9 credits of Engl 1033, Exposition and Argumentation, ENGL 3003, Writing for the Professions and CS 1043 or CS 2503
- 18 credits of Tulsa Curriculum requirements in Blocks I and II
To become a candidate for a degree in applied mathematics, a student must complete all mathematics courses in the curriculum with a grade-point average of at least 2.0, and earn a 2.0 or better overall.
Computer Sciences Option
Mathematics requirements above plus:
- 21 credits of computer sciences
CS 1043, CS 2003, CS 2123 and 12 credits of Computer science electives, at least three courses at the 3000 level or above, selected with the approval of the student’s advisor.
- 16 credits of sciences and engineering
Phys 2053, 2051 and 12 credits of basic science or engineering science selected with the approval of the student’s advisor.
- 21 credits of general electives selected with advisor’s approval
Engineering Option
Mathematics requirements above, plus:
- 11 credits of basic sciences
Chem 1013, 1011, Phys 2053, 2063, Phys 2051
- 25 credits of engineering sciences and engineering
EE 2001, EE 2003, ES 2013, ES2023, ES 3023, ES 3053 and 9 credits of engineering sciences and engineering electives selected with the approval of the student’s advisor. Students with double majors may, with advisor’s approval, make substitutions in the above engineering science courses.
- 19 credits of general electives selected with advisor’s approval
Environmental Sciences Option
Mathematics requirements above, plus:
- 28 credits of basic sciences
Biol 1603, Biol 1601, Biol 3084, Chem 1013, Chem 1011, Chem 1023, Chem 1021, Chem 3013, 3011, Phys 2053, 2051, Geol 1014
- 9 credits of environmental science and engineering
Chem 4053, ChE 4163, Geol 4513
- 18 credits of general electives selected with advisor’s approval
Business Option
Satisfactory completion of courses in the business option should allow the completion of an M.B.A. with only one full year of graduate programs.
Mathematics requirements above plus
- 29 credits of business core
Acct 2113, 2123, Econ 2013, Econ 2023, and Business electives (selected with approval of student’s advisor)
- 7 credits of Tulsa Curriculum block III courses
- 19 credits of general electives selected with approval of student’s advisor
Education Option
Mathematics requirements above, plus:
- 31 credits of professional education
