Research
Our internationally recognized faculty pursue active research programs covering a wide spectrum of business disciplines. While such research makes significant contribution to the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines, our faculty also bring the results of this research into their classrooms, adding significantly to the learning experience of our students.
MBA Student Faculty Mentor Win Fulbright Awards
Fulbright grants enable MBA student Haden Snyder and his faculty mentor J.Markham Collins, professor of finance, to further their research in Europe by comparing ethnic groups interactions across neighboring countries.
MBA student Haden Snyder (BSIBL ‘06) and his faculty mentor J. Markham Collins, professor of finance, received Fulbright grants allowing them to further their research in Europe.
Since 2005, Collins and Snyder have conducted a joint research project investigating the diversity of workplace attitudes within different population groups. They have specifically looked at how Germans, Hungarians and Romanians interact. Snyder’s research presentation, entitled “Deciphering Romania: A Cultural Study of the Ethnic Germans, Hungarians, and Romanians Living in Transylvania,” won second place in TU’s Ninth Annual Student Research Colloquium in 2006.
Snyder was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach English language and conversation to high school students in Germany during the 2007-2008 academic year.
Collins, who is the director of TU’s International Business and Entrepreneurship Institute and also serves as the college’s associate dean for academic programs, was a Fulbright guest lecturer and researcher at the Institute of Economic Science at Eszterhazy Karoly College in Eger, Hungary.
While in Europe, Snyder and Collins expanded their research in Germany, Hungary and Romania by gathering data from a larger sample size of the population to compare how different ethnic groups interact across neighboring countries.
While more information about faculty research interests and publications may be found by viewing the individual faculty pages, you will find research highlights and faculty features at the right of this and other pages on our web site. We invite you to explore the dynamic and interesting research being conducted by our faculty.
In addition to the extensive research programs of our faculty, there are many opportunities for students to learn about and participate in research projects while at The University of Tulsa. Many courses have required research components, and students annually may participate in the Student Research Colloquium.
Here are just a few of the research topics explored by recent T.U. business students:
- Comparing differences in work values by examining differences in culture among the ethnic Hungarians, ethnic Germans, and Romanians all living within the province of Transylvania
- Evaluating the question, “Why did Wal-Mart fail in Germany.”
- Exploring citizen’s attitudes about state-run lotteries.
One of the strongest research opportunities for many students is offered through the Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge (TURC) program, described below.
Collins College of Business Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge
The Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge (TURC) program emphasizes undergraduate research, academics, leadership, and community involvement. The TURC Program offers highly motivated students with the opportunity to increase their research skills while expanding knowledge in an area of student interest. The program also offers students unique opportunities for personal development while preparing students for a life of community involvement and for pursuing internationally competitive fellowships and scholarships.
The centerpiece of the program is research and students pursue research in areas of mutual interest with their faculty advisors. Each TURC student works closely with their faculty advisor who mentors as well as monitors his or her progress. The goals of such research may be to deliver papers at academic conferences, to produce publishable articles, or to initiate meaningful business or community projects. To participate in the TURC program, a student must be highly motivated, have a specific research area of interest and be paired with a faculty advisor. The College supports the TURC program and college faculty members are available to serve as student advisors.
Students who are interested in participating in the TURC program and want to pursue research in a business related area are encouraged to contact Tim Urban, Collins College of Business TURC Coordinator or Nona Charleston, TURC University Administrator.
