My research focuses on the effects of institutions such as legal systems and cultural norms on entrepreneurship across countries. I examine how different institutional arrangements impact the likelihood of various types of entrepreneurial activity. I have a particular interest in studying entrepreneurship in transition economies, especially China. The rules of the game in China are changing constantly and the ramifications of this for new business are fascinating. I also study the financing of new firms. I seek to understand the degree to which new firms across industries rely upon bank loans and venture capital v. loans from family and friends and the founder’s own wealth.
