Special Topic Symposia

PLANNING SYMPOSIA FOR INCLUSION IN
TU Student Research Colloquium (April 1 – 6, 2013)

If you are interested in organizing a special topic session for inclusion in this year’s colloquium, you can consider formatting it as a separate symposia. The main benefits to this are:

  • Format does not have to follow Colloquium session guidelines, unless you would like the presentations judged for Colloquium awards
  • Gives more flexibility to the presenters and organizers on how their presentations are formatted for their audience (can be more discipline specific than normal colloquium presentations)
  • Advertise your work and that of your colleagues to the campus more easily.

To be consider as a possible special topic symposia, please submit the following information:

  • Complete the Symposia Submission Form – Click Here
  • Attach a 250-500 word descriptive paragraph/abstract of the symposium’s theme and include a title with list of possible participants and organizing chair’s contact info by February 14, 2013 to hope-geiger@utulsa.edu.
    • Please also note preferred dates and times for event that fall within the April 1 – 6 timeframe. (If your presenters want to be judged for colloquium awards, events must be scheduled between April 1 – 4 only.)
  • Have individual participants register on Colloquium website by February 14, 2013 with their abstracts and presentation titles: https://secureweb.utulsa.edu/colloquium/colloquium.htm.
  • To be considered a secured event, the symposium must be at least 1 ½ hours in length and cannot consist of only one presentation. Presentation lengths are up to the organizing chair as long as they meet the minimum overall time requirement and may even span several days if necessary.

If you want your presenters to be judged for colloquium awards, they must follow the standard format (15 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes for question and answers). For symposia that wanted to be judged, a minimum of 4 presenters is required to meet the 1.5 hour requirement.

These guidelines are only to help facilitate organizing symposia attached to the Annual TU Student Research Colloquium. Decisions concerning the topic, length and number of presentations, as well as communication with the presenters, are the responsibility of the organizing symposium chair.
