About the Program

Outside McFarlinThe Museum Science and Management program combines interdisciplinary coursework and practical, hands-on experience. Graduates are prepared to be the next generation of dynamic and effective museum professionals.


The Master of Arts program in Museum Science and Management is open to students who have earned an undergraduate degree in any academic discipline from an accredited university. Admission to a particular track within the MSM program, however, may be limited based on prior coursework and will be decided by the MSM Graduate Committee after the applicant requests to participate in a track.

Applicants must submit all required application materials prior to an admission decision and meet all general standards for graduate admission at The University of Tulsa. Required application materials and general standards for admission are available on the Graduate School Web site.

A limited number of graduate assistantships are offered to highly qualified, full-time MSM graduate students. Applicants interested in an assistantship should complete the Graduate Assistantship Application form.

After Graduation

Graduates of the MSM program have the intellectual training and practical experience to become the next generation of dynamic and effective museum professionals. Specifically:

  • Instruction is based on current best practices;
  • The MSM program offers internships and student experiences that reflect the workings of a full-service museum;
  • Graduates understand the importance of the visitor/audience experience in virtually all aspects of museum functions;
  • Graduates are mentored by MSM staff to ensure a broad understanding of professional opportunities and responsibilities.
