University of Tulsa anthropology professor George Odell has received the “Excellence in Archaeological Analysis” award from the Society for American Archaeology, an international organization with more than 7,000 members that is dedicated to the research, interpretation and protection of the archaeological heritage of the Americas.

The award was given to Odell on April 1 at the society’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City for his work in the area of lithic analysis, which focuses on studying stone tools. He is the author of the 2004 book, “Lithic Analysis,” a 258-page guide to the basic tools used in lithic analysis. It includes information on history of stone tool research and the manufacture and function of stone tools.

Odell, who joined the TU anthropology department in 1984, demonstrates the making of stone tools during courses he gives for TU students on the various facets of stone tool analysis.
