I am trained as an ancient and medieval historian and am also a Latinist. My professional research focuses on the late antique and early medieval West, with an emphasis on France and Italy. I am especially interested in barbaro-Roman relations and questions of Romanness and Roman identity during and in the immediate aftermath of Rome’s fall (i.e. the fifth and sixth centuries). My current book project examines such questions within the context of “Ostrogothic” Italy, placing it firmly within the Roman imperial tradition. I work with a number of difficult (and often neglected) Latin authors, including Sidonius Apollinaris, Magnus Felix Ennodius, and Cassiodorus Senator. At TU I teach courses in ancient and medieval history.
