About the Department

The Theatre department features courses that flexibly serve the need for both general and in-depth study, allowing students to pursue specialization in one area or gain a broad, general background.

The curriculum combines a strong liberal arts program with the acquisition of balance knowledge in all aspects of theatre: performance, directing, design, stage management, technical skills, history, playwriting, and literature. Theatre students also study in a minor field such as art, music, literature, psychology, creative writing, film studies, or other disciplines.

Musical theatre provides courses to serve student needs in all three areas of musical theatre performance: acting, singing, and dancing. Musical theatre students acquire knowledge in all areas of musical theatre performance: acting, voice and movement for the stage, audition techniques, basic piano and theory, private vocal study, musical theatre history and literature, stagecraft, and theatre dance. A minor area of study is not required since the degree offers areas of concentration in both music and theatre.

Music theatre students will perform in mainstage musicals of all genres, cabaret offerings, and studio performances.

A double major in Theatre (taking specified course work to satisfy state certification requirements) with a double major in Secondary Education may be obtained for those interested in certifying to teach Theatre at the high school level.  Secondary teacher certification and the MTA in Theatre are offered jointly with the School of Education.
