Gallery To Present Work of Former Disney Artist and TU Alumnus Oct. 6-28

Former Disney artist Tom Neely, a cartoonist, painter and animator who is a graduate of The University of Tulsa, will give a talk and attend a reception, Thursday, Oct. 6, for the opening of an exhibit of his work in TU’s Alexandre Hogue Gallery, Fifth Street and College Avenue.

Neely will speak at 4 p.m. and the reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit, “The Blot,” will be open until Oct. 28. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

At TU, he focused on focused on painting and printmaking, earning his bachelor’s degree in art and art education in 1997. He taught art and art history at Tulsa Community College.

After earning his master’s in 2000 from the San Francisco Art Institute, Neely was hired by Disney in Los Angeles. In 2003 he left Disney to become a freelance artist.

In November, four of his paintings will be featured in the American Illustration 24 annual. He is working as a background painter for the Nickelodeon cartoon, “The X’s.”

Neely recently finished an animated music video for the song, “Don’t Pick On Me” by The Muffs, selected for the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2005. Last year he created a seven-minute, anti-Bush political cartoon titled “Brother, Can You Spare a Job?”
