Avi Mintz received his Ph.D. from the Philosophy and Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. His dissertation is entitled “The Labor of Learning: A Study of the Role of Pain in Education.” In his dissertation, he explores the productive role of pain in learning. Professor Mintz’s main research interest is the history of educational philosophy, particularly the debates about education in the Socratic dialogues. He is also interested in the educational theories of Nietzsche, Rousseau and others. He has also studied theories of social justice education and is currently in the early stages of a collaborative project about religious schooling in Canada.
