Introduction
Stefan Z. Miska is currently Professor and Jonathan Detwiler Endowed Chair of Petroleum Engineering and Executive Director of Drilling Research at The University of Tulsa.
He has much experience in academia, teaching at the University of Mining and Metallurgy, Krakow, Poland, The Norwegian Institute of Technology and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Socorro, NM. prior to coming to TU.
In 1992 Dr. Miska joined The University of Tulsa, as Chair of its Petroleum Engineering Department, and he served as Chair until 2001. During his tenure as faculty member he has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses. The main courses he teaches at TU are Well Completion Design, Advanced Drilling and Drilling Optimization. He has enhanced his coursework by incorporating consulting work experience gained with Dowell-Schlumberger, SOHIO and Arco Oil and Gas, Smith Int. and Unocal. In addition, he has developed and taught numerous courses for the petroleum industry.
Dr. Miska has participated in many aspects of petroleum research. During the 1980s and early 1990s he worked on air and gas drilling problems that led to the creation of new downhole tools and in the development of calculation techniques that are in broad industrial use today. Over the years his research interests have focused on well control, modeling of pressure build-up under impending blow-out conditions; wellbore hydraulics; buckling behavior of tubulars and axial force transfer; underbalanced drilling (aerated muds, foams); and mechanics of drillstrings.
In 1996, he took over as Executive Director of the TU Drilling Research Projects (TUDRP) which is an industry-university cooperative research program founded in 1967 currently consisting of 17 Member Companies. Dr. Miska is responsible for development of research, advising of students, Member relations and the complex TUDRP research facilities.
