About the School

The McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering emphasizes individualized education and all courses are taught by faculty. Students also have the opportunity to interact with different cultures through the diverse backgrounds of international students we attract.

Course requirements the first two years of study are concentrated on a background in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and geology, as well as courses in liberal arts via the TU curriculum. Computer science literacy is expected in all upper-division courses. In the second semester of the sophomore year, students begin to concentrate on the engineering sciences and introductory courses in petroleum engineering. The final year is focused on technical problems that are unique to petroleum exploitation.

In addition to a unique teaching perspective, The McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering has a very strong research program that is supported by both industry and government sources. Undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in research programs alongside graduate students.

The McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering is housed in Stephenson Hall. Petroleum engineering students can expect their studies to be enhanced by access to computer facilities exclusively for petroleum and mechanical engineering students, and testing laboratories on both campuses including a drilling simulator, production lab, a multiphase flow facility, and a rock and fluid laboratory.

Petroleum engineering students are active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Since we offer minors in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and geosciences, membership in other national and international organizations are available.

Because oil and gas is a major part of the U.S. economy, the majority of TU petroleum engineering graduates find excellent job opportunities with oil companies. However, a degree in petroleum engineering can lead to a wide variety of career paths including environmental oriented jobs such as prevention, monitoring, remediation, and minimization of petroleum waste.
