Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange was appointed United States District Judge for the Western District of Oklahoma by President Bill Clinton in 1994. She was the first African American federal judge in the six states that comprise the Tenth Circuit. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District — the first female U.S. Attorney in Oklahoma. She served in the Oklahoma State Senate from 1986-1993 — the first female African American to serve there.
Earlier in her career, Judge Miles-LaGrange prosecuted Nazi war criminals as a Criminal Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, and later prosecuted sex crimes as an Assistant District Attorney in Oklahoma County. She has also had significant international and human rights experience. The late Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, William Rehnquist, appointed her to the International Judicial Relations Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference, where she served for six years and chaired the Committee’s Africa Working Group.
During her entire public service career, Judge Miles-LaGrange has championed educational opportunity, civil rights, and the even-handed administration of justice. As one of Oklahoma’s most dedicated and respected public servants, she has been a role model for young Oklahomans of all backgrounds wishing to pursue public service careers.
A cum laude graduate of Vassar College and Howard University Law School, Judge Miles- LaGrange has received numerous civic and professional honors, including induction into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame, the Child Advocates Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Bar Association’s “Woman Trailblazer” Award. She is an alumnus of Leadership Oklahoma Class V. Judge Miles-LaGrange tutors fifth graders at the KIPP Reach Academy. She has one daughter, Johnna Marie.
