January marks the fifth anniversary of TU/Murdock Villa partnership
On Thursday, January 23, at 5:30 PM, The University of Tulsa College of Law will host its monthly birthday party for residents of Murdock Villa, an apartment community for disabled and elderly adults. The celebration will mark a five-year partnership between Murdock Villa and several TU College of Law student organizations.
In 2009, a former TU Law faculty member reached out to the housing facility as a prospective community service project for students. Murdock Villa later became a participant of the TU True Blue Neighbors program, providing an opportunity for other TU students and faculty to volunteer at the birthday parties. True Blue Neighbors is a comprehensive service initiative allowing the TU family to team up with local organizations for community improvement projects.
At least 18 law student organizations have sponsored multiple parties during the past five years, and other supporters such as local church organizations and Girl Scout troops have stepped in to host during the summer months.
“The parties are the talk of the residents, and a positive link to the TU College of Law,” said Lou Lindsey, event co-founder and former Associate Director of the Mabee Legal Information Center. “Attendance is always high, and several law students keep coming back, building friendships among the residents.”
This month’s sponsors are the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and Energy Law Journal. All TU students, faculty, and staff are invited to volunteer. Volunteers are encouraged to wear TU True Blue Neighbors or TU blue attire.
