Mentoring Program
The University of Tulsa College of Law Mentoring Program is a matching program that is designed to generate professional relationships between practicing legal professionals and law students at the College of Law. The Mentoring Program provides law students with the opportunity to ask experienced legal professionals questions, observe the workplace, and learn about resources and professional organizations for lawyers in the legal community. The Mentoring Program also provides legal professionals the opportunity to guide and cultivate promising law students to the practice of law.
Law students and legal professionals desiring to participate in the Mentoring Program must submit an application. Applications are available online and in hard copy at the front office at the College of Law.
Alumni Relations and Career Services will work together to match law students and legal professionals based upon information submitted in their applications. A law student may be matched with a legal professional who practices in the practice setting, practice area, or geographic area of interest to the law student. Matches may also be made based upon part-time vs. full-time attendance status while in law school.
Each applicant will be asked to participate in the Mentoring Program for one academic year. Mentors and mentees will be asked to meet in person at least twice per academic semester, in addition to communicating by email and phone. The Mentoring Program Handbook provides information, guidelines, tips, and suggested activities for creating and maintaining a successful mentoring relationship. The Mentoring Committee, with the help of Career Services and Alumni Relations, will also plan at least one activity each academic semester for mentors and mentees.
The Mentoring Program is not designed as a means for students to gain employment, and the mentor is not obligated to provide an internship or job interview. The Mentoring Program is designed to provide students with learning experiences in different areas of law and insight into the life of a practicing lawyer.
