Robert A. West

2013 Outstanding Entrepreneur

Robert A. West (BSBA ’61) is chief executive officer of Anchor Drilling Fluids USA, Inc., the largest privately held drilling fluids company in the United States. He and his son, Phil West (BS ’87), purchased the 42-employee enterprise in 2005. Today, it employs more than 400 people and is active in all major U.S. oil and gas basins.

While attending TU on a football scholarship, Bob majored in petroleum marketing. He worked a variety of positions in the oilfield before serving as owner and president of Beacon Well Services, an oilfield service company based in Oklahoma City. After taking Beacon public in 1977, West sold the company in 1982 and remained as president until 1985. After Beacon, he formed The West Group, Inc., a company he sold in 1995.

He has served on the Board of Directors of Alexander Energy Corporation, National Energy Group and Summit Bank. West is a member of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association.

West’s TU involvement dates back to 1976 when his first wife, Sandra, became the first woman to serve as president of the TU Alumni Association. Now an emeritus trustee, West joined the TU Board of Trustees in 1988 and is a past president of the Golden Hurricane Club and the Letterman’s Club. He was named a TU Distinguished Alumnus in 2002 and an Outstanding Alumnus in the College Collins of Business in 2011.

West has served as chairman of the Tulsa Sports Commission and is current chairman of the Oklahoma City John Marshall High School Foundation. He has one son and two grandchildren and is married to Kathy Kraft West.
