Conference Overview

The 68th Annual Conference of Accountants was held May 13-14, 2014. First held in 1947 and initiated by the late Professor Paul J. Graber, the Conference is hosted by The University of Tulsa. It is directed by a planning committee with representatives of the co-sponsoring professional organizations, an advisory board, and the TU School of Accounting and Management Information Systems. The mission is to discuss both current and emerging issues that impact accountants and the accounting profession. The Conference uses a holistic approach to accounting continuing education that encompasses all of the functional areas of accounting, including financial, managerial, systems, auditing and tax areas, and attempts to place accounting in a broad business context. 

477 registered to attend the 2014 conference. The audience included professionals in public accounting, private industry and governmental accounting positions, and accounting and business school professors together with a number of accounting students and younger accounting graduates new to the profession. Attendees are primarily from the Tulsa area and Northeastern Oklahoma.

Each Conference typically includes speakers drawn from organizations that impact accounting policy, including:

  • Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Federal Reserve Bank
  • Public Company Accounting Oversight Board
  • Financial Accounting Standards Board
  • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
  • Institute of Management Accountants
  • Tax Executives Institute
  • Certified Fraud Examiners
  • Institute of Internal Auditors

Accounting speakers have also been provided by national & regional accounting firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Deloitte and Grant Thornton.

Leaders in the business community, representing both local and national companies have participated in our conference as keynote speakers. Past participants from the political arena have included the Lieutenant Governor, State Treasurer, Mayor of Tulsa and the Attorney General.

We begin the process of defining the conference theme and inviting our speakers each August with a goal to complete the program brochure by February.

Proceeds from the conference are used to provide scholastic awards to promising undergraduate and graduate accounting students. Since 2004, the conference has awarded almost $216,000.  Additionally, our attendees can earn up to 14 hours of CPE for CPA or other certification continuing education requirements.
