About the Department

Students majoring in Exercise and Sports Science (ExSS) may use the degree as preparation for professional study in medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy and other health care professions. Graduates often go on to work in commercial fitness centers, corporate wellness programs, personal training, and as strength and conditioning coaches.

Students wishing to work in a commercial fitness setting may benefit from including basic management and/or marketing courses in their degree plan. It is also possible for students outside of the department to complete a minor in Coaching.

All ExSS students complete two internships that give them a chance to work in the field of their choice and gain some experience before graduating. The internships allow students to explore career options before they join the workforce, so that they can more accurately choose their elective classes to prepare them for their future.

Students may also choose the Teacher Certification emphasis within the ExSS major. Courses in this emphasis prepare students to teach physical education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Students successfully completing the Teacher Certification emphasis are eligible for Oklahoma teacher licensure in Physical Education/Health/Safety.
