Averill to receive Ed Johnson Award and be inducted this spring

DavidAverillDavid Averill, a TU graduate and editor of The Tulsa World's editorial pages has been named the 2013 inductee into The University of Tulsa Communication Hall of Fame.

The Faculty of Communication is proud to announce that one of TU’s own graduates, David Averill, will be awarded this year’s Ed Johnson Award and will be inducted into the TU Communication Hall of Fame this spring.

Averill graduated from TU with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism, and has been with The Tulsa World since 1969, first as a reporter and then as an editorial writer and opinion page columnist. He is currently the editor of The Tulsa World’s editorial pages, a position he has held since 2007. As a Sunday columnist, he has written about children’s issues—including poverty, health and nutrition, housing and education—as well as government and politics, fine arts and conservation.

His columns have won news writing awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME). He also received the 2006 Cameron Duncan Media Award from the anti-hunger group Results International. In 2003 Averill was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.

Mark Brewin, TU's communication chair, said that the faculty’s decision to present Averill with the Johnson Award, made in consultation with previous award winners, was based on his contribution to Tulsa’s journalistic community and also on the “moral vision and independence of mind” that he has demonstrated in his writing.

Averill has served as board member and president of the Tulsa Press Club and as trustee and chairman of its Educational and Charitable Trust. He has helped supervise more than a dozen Habitat for Humanity houses in Tulsa and is past president of the Tulsa Habitat for Humanity board. He has also served on the boards of Youth Services of Tulsa, The University of Tulsa Alumni Association and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

The Johnson award is given in memory of Ed Johnson, former journalist and also long-time head of the journalism program. It is awarded to members of the Tulsa or TU community who have made outstanding contributions to the communication professions.
