Kristen T. Oertel will join the history department in the fall of 2010 as the Mary Francis Barnard endowed chair in Nineteenth Century American History.

With her PhD from the University of Texas, Oertel has published on social conflict in Kansas prior to the Civil War and is now completing a co-authored study of abolitionist and early suffragette Clarina Nichols.
