The 2011 Mary Frances Barnard Lecture will feature renowned Civil War historian William W. Freehling, Singletary Professor Emeritus from the University of Kentucky and Senior Fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. This important lecture will commemorate the sesquicentennial year of the Civil War.
Dr. Freehling will present his lecture, "Excruciating Labor: How Secessionists Destroyed the Union," on Monday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Hall, with a wine and cheese reception following.
Dr. Freehling's famous two-volume work, The Road to Disunion, published by Yale University Press, has received numerous accolades, including the Washington Post's Notable Book award and the New York Times Book Review's Editor Choice award.
