Hello, I am Dr. Johna Smasal, and I enjoy serving as an adjunct instructor in the psychology department at the University of Tulsa. My full-time job is working as a clinical psychologist in my private practice. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Currently, I provide individual and family psychotherapy to children and adolescents ages 8-22 and to some adults. In addition, I enjoy conducting psychological evaluations with social security claimants and prospective adoptive parents. My therapy is informed by empirically supported treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. Many of my clients come from low-income families or the foster care system, and they present with a host of challenges that require a multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary approach. I spend a great deal of time consulting with psychiatrists, teachers, speech-language therapists, and occupational therapists. I believe I have found fulfilling balance by choosing to work in both the clinical and academic settings. I am able to draw from my clinical experiences in teaching. In addition, teaching provides a place to stay up-to-date on the most current literature so that I can provide better services to my clients.
