Sociology Majors and Minors to Teach for America
Sociology majors Maria Copp and Caitlin Dryke (not pictured), sociology minor Alli Price, and sociology alum Elizabeth McCrary will all be working for Teach for America (TFA) beginning in the fall of 2012. McCrary has taught preschool in Las Vegas for the past two years and will return to Tulsa in 2012 to work for the Teach for America organization in an administrative capacity.
Teach For America is growing the movement of leaders who work to ensure that kids growing up in poverty get an excellent education. The University of Tulsa is hosting the Summer Teach for America Conference on campus.
People spend their entire lives in social groups and networks, ranging from the family to global systems. Sociologists study how these groups and networks work. Developing the ability to analyze society is a core component of anyone's education and personal development, and thus the sociology major facilitates any career. In addition sociology majors can design a specific program of study in preparation for graduate school, professional school (law, business, medicine), and for careers in social service, government, research, consulting, teaching, or business.
