The University of Tulsa’s theatre program will present six performances of a new, original experimental play at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, April 23-28, in Kendall Hall at TU. The play “In the Night, Meditations on Dreams and Darkness, With Food,” is a company-created work conceived of and directed by Michael Wright, director of the creative writing program at TU.

The play will move the audience through several spaces as it tracks the stories we tell ourselves in dreams. The company will perform the show without sets or props, focusing on the actors’ ability to create the environment and situation. The audience will be treated to “dream confections” as part of the performance. “The idea,” Wright says, “is to create a purely theatrical experience – one that could not be duplicated or work in any other medium than theatre.”

“In the Night” has been developed through improvisations, exercises, movement explorations and dance techniques. Abstract video works, created by film studies majors Matthew Nader and Amanda Ross, will be incorporated into the piece.

Seating will be limited to 125 for each performance. Those requiring special assistance can contact the box office at (918) 631-2567. For more information, contact the TU department of theatre at (918) 631-2566.

The company members include Sam Adams, Megan Buchner, Jenny Guy, Alex Hover, Lauryl Lane, David Lewis, Stephanie Orloski, Susie Robinette, Paul Sheckarski and Amie Smith. Hank Willenbrink is the assistant director and will play a part in the performance. The show’s stage manager is Melissa Enochs and assisted by Rayna Smith. The set design is by professor Susan Barrett, with lighting by Carrie Edwards and Chris Mayo, and costume design by Katie Irish. The play’s sound design is by Curt Selby with special sound montage work by Frank Christel.

Michael Wright holds an MFA in theatre from Tulane University and is a former recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Playwriting Fellowship. His plays “Payments and Debts” are published by Palmetto Play Service. He has also published several books on playwriting and has published plays, poems, fiction, travel writing and photography in numerous magazines and journals.
