Maggy Cuesta to Lecture on The Power of Typography

Tuesday, March 01, 2011

This event is free and open to the public.

Maggie Cuesta, dean of the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida, will lecture on The Power of Typography on Tuesday, March 29th, at 4 pm in the Jerri Jones Lecture Hall, Phillips Hall 211.

The Power of Typography was an exhibition recently on display in the Alexandre Hogue Gallery this past January and February.   It was comprised of  74 typographical pieces that were once part of the private collection of internationally recognized Cuban graphic designer Felix Beltran (born 1938). Originally conceived as a 90-piece exhibition in Europe in the 1970s, it has been seen throughout Europe and Latin America.  This is the first time it has traveled to North America, with venues at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and at The University of Tulsa.  Dean Cuesta will enlighten us on the history of the collection and on the extraordinarily designed pieces in the exhibition,  by artists such as Theo Van Doesburg, El Lissitzky, Jan Tschichold, Gerhad Marcks, Kurt Schwitters and Hermann Zapf.
