Valero recognized for outstanding leadership and service in the arts

The Oklahoma Arts Council has selected University of Tulsa School of Art Director M. Teresa Valero to receive the 2013 Governor's Arts in Education Award. Valero will be honored at a special ceremony on Nov. 13 at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City.

The Arts in Education Award recognizes an individual, organization, school, educator or group for outstanding leadership and service in the arts benefiting youth and/or arts in education.

After joining the School of Art in 1990, Valero helped create TU’s certificate in advertising program. She also co-founded Third Floor Design, a student-run design studio on the TU campus that provides design services for nonprofit organizations in and around the Tulsa area. Today, she serves as the organization's creative director. "I believe Third Floor Design helps our students become 'citizen designers' who not only do pro bono work but also get involved in the community and learn about Tulsa's many nonprofits," Valero said.

As an applied professor of art, Valero also works as a documentary photographer and graphic designer. Her creativity in design and advertising concepts has garnered her recognition from the Art Directors Club of Tulsa and the American Advertising Federation. She has curated many art exhibitions, and her photography has been displayed internationally.

Valero is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Center for Cross-Cultural Design.
