Semester two, for the WIN!

Khristen
Alright, first semester down. I’ve heard people say that the first semester is the hardest. And then I’ve heard others say that it just keeps getting harder as you go. So! My opinion so far? I love college! :)

Wrap up of last semester: I really enjoyed my first semester at TU. One thing that I think helped me enjoy it so much and really feel like Tulsa is home was my involvement in different activities. Whether academic, social, or community-oriented, there are tons of things to get involved in, whatever your interests and major.

Plan for semester two: Well, seeing as I had very few regrets in semester one, my plan is to do about the same things that I did last semester: study lots, invest in the community, try new things, and HAVE FUN!

With a successful first semester behind me and an equally promising second semester in front, I would like to leave you with a very cliche saying: Time flies when you’re having fun. Although I’ve been at TU for a whole semester, I still feel like I just got here. I can’t believe that I’ve completed my entire first semester! So, whether you’re in high school or anywhere else, enjoy where you are. College will come soon enough, graduation, job, life. Live where you are, enjoy everything you can. :)

Back from break!

Sarah

After resting up over winter break, it’s time for another great semester at Tulsa! I moved into Lottie Jane Residence Hall with two of my friends this semester. Triple room. Triple the fun. As you can see from the picture, we are so happy to be back on campus because freshman year is an absolute blast. Until next time, Go TU!

Tuesday with Tulsa: TU Treks

Today’s Tuesday with Tulsa post comes to us from Corey H., the former president of TU Treks, a student organization on campus.

Hello Prospective Students!

My name is Corey H., and I am a sophomore Petroleum Engineering student here at Tulsa! I am also the former President of TU Treks, the outdoor adventure group on campus. I am going abroad this semester, so we elected a new president for spring. We  had a fun fall, and I want to encourage you to check us out if you do decide to come to TU. Here’s our fall semester in a nut shell.

As the outdoor adventure group on campus, you may think we like camping. You’re wrong. We LOVE camping. To kick off the semester, we started with a combo camping/kayaking trip. We went to Tahlequah, OK to kayak the Illinois river. It was a lot of fun, but with some spills.

We also had a paintballing event, with great success! We played capture the flag, civil war, Alamo, and more.

We recently went camping at Greenleaf State park, where we Geocached, fished, and camped.

We have also gone indoor rock climbing, twice!

Overall, it has been a fun semester. TU Treks is school supported, meaning that all of these events were free! We are always looking to include new members, and your level of involvement is entirely up to you. You can plan the events with the executive council, attend meetings, or just come partake in the events! Come check us out when you arrive on campus, we look forward to Trekking with you!

TU Armed Forces Bowl

For those of you who don’t know, TU played in the Armed Forces Bowl against BYU on December 30th.

Unfortunately, we lost. In the last 11 seconds. I don’t really want to talk about it.

What I do want to do is show you some pictures from the big kickoff party in Dallas the night before the game. I wasn’t there, but I managed to get my hands on some party pics.

If you look closely, you might see some bloggers, University Ambassadors, and even an Admission Counselor…

TU might have lost the game, but we still had a good time. You will never struggle to find school pride around here!

Performing Arts Weekend

I’m so impressed with students who can sing, act and play instruments. I’m tone deaf (OK, maybe it hasn’t been officially diagnosed, but it was suggested by my music teachers in school and is reiterated on a daily basis by my husband)  and have always been fascinated by people with musical abilities that I obviously don’t have. I also know how many hours a week these students practice (on top of school, homework, work and other activities), which is also impressive.  We have admitted a lot of very talented students this year. I hope you all decide to come to TU so I can watch you perform!

If you want to audition for a Performing Arts Scholarship, act fast! Here is the information:

January 27-29, 2012, TU will host a Performing Arts Weekend for students who wish to audition for talent-based scholarships for Fall 2012. Auditions for scholarships will be held at various times during the Performing Arts Weekend  in the following areas:

  • Instrumental Music
  • Vocal Music
  • Theatre (Acting)
  • Theatre (Design)
  • Musical Theatre (with Dance)

In order to audition, you must have completed your application for admission to TU. If you haven’t done so already, you may apply at apply.utulsa.edu.

If you can’t participate in Performing Arts Weekend, but you still want to audition, contact the Music or Theatre & Musical Theatre departments ASAP to schedule an alternate audition date.

Good luck!

Return to a Different World

Khristen
Ahh, being off of school: no more homework, no more tests, no more Tulsa. As a reminder, I am from a little town in Southeastern Oklahoma about three hours away form Tulsa called Durant. I’ve always wondered how different it would be to go home from college. I have been fairly involved in clubs and things at TU and as a result did not go home much this semester. Christmas break is my first time to be home in a while and definitely the first time to be home for so long (we get a whole month off of school!). Obviously going home is completely different for different people with different families, but let me share some of the differences that I have experienced from this going back to my family.

First, and possibly the most obvious, is the presence of rules. However, my parents and I get along pretty well and we had a talk about curfew and other such rules before it became a problem. So while I did still have a curfew and got to run all the errands EVER, these were not really a problem for me. But for sure different from college!

Another thing that is pleasantly different is the FOOD! While the food at college isn’t the worst ever…. =/ it will never compare to the delicious food cooked by your own mom. :)

Lastly is just getting to be around your family. :) I’ve missed them a lot and it has been great to spend time with them over this break. However, I do miss my campus and friends at TU! But the break’ll be over soon and return to the world of college we will. :)
