As my third semester at TU begins to comes to an end and we have begun fall break, I’ve finally got the chance to relax a little bit. Things have been going at warp speed lately and just some of the things that have happened in the last month involve homecoming, haunted hall, parent’s weekend, bowling bash, the pretentious art show, taste of the John, movie premier night, and humans vs. zombies.
Homecoming this year was so fun! From the standpoint of being part of housing staff, it was a very busy week and definitely filled with a lot of work, but nevertheless I enjoyed it all! One my favorite events that we participated in was street painting. Street painting landed on my birthday so it was embarrassing when the rest of my fellow staff members made everyone there sing me happy birthday but it was definitely something to remember. It was also a little sad that it happened to ran the next day and washed away all of our work but it was fun while it lasted!
Haunted Hall was a Hurricane Thursday event that happened to not only land during the week of homecoming, but also on Halloween. It was a Fisher South (the all freshman residence hall) event and put on by the members of hall government. We turned the three story hall into a haunted house and every level was kicked up a notch on the scary scale. It was fun getting to listen to a series of constant screams all night and seeing the 8 hours of work we put into the event pay off.
That weekend was parent’s weekend. I’m from Arizona and my parents couldn’t make it out for a weekend, but I was so fortunate to be adopted by multiple families for dinners, lunches, and brunches. My friend’s family even brought Kate’s puppy down for the weekend so we got lots of puppy time during the bonfire.
The latest event that I participated in was a week long game of Humans vs. Zombies. Everyone started out as a human and had a bandanna tied to their arm. There was one Alpha Zombie and thus began the game. The zombies had to tag a human to turn them, and the humans had to throw socks at the zombies to stun them for 15 minutes. During the day zombies had missions that the humans tired to interfere with and at night the humans were given missions they tried to complete without running into any zombies. By the end of the week there were about 40 zombies and 20 humans, and the humans were able to win the game! I did not have enough point to get me into the top humans, but I was the longest living human because I started day one so I was proud of myself!
As I said, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activities but hoe could you not love all of the fun activities that happen on campus? All that is left to do is make it through finals and gear up for the spring semester!
One of the things I have always wished I could take a part in is Habitat for Humanity. I never had the time required to be an active member of the Habitat group on campus, but I had the great opportunity this month to spend a Saturday morning working on a build. I am not a morning person, to say the least, but we all got up bright and early and headed to the build site. This was the sixth Saturday that they worked at this site and all of the girls that were there manned up to do some heavy lifting. We drilled these orange “huggies” to the roof so that when people put up the singles they have something to support them if they were to start slipping. We also nailed beams to the roof and metal hurricane brackets to each beam connecting the roof to the wall. It was actually really fun and my favorite part was getting to use a nail gun!
Even if building houses isn’t your thing and you still want participate in some sort of community service, TU makes it so easy! It is never hard to find a project to plug into; the only hard part is choosing which projects you can commit to with out over committing yourself!
Another year has started and I am so glad to be back on campus at TU! This is my second year here but last year I lived in Fisher West Suites. This year I get the chance to live in Fisher South, the all freshman residence hall, since I now work for housing. Let me tell you, this dorm is the most social place and I love it! Everyone is always out and doing things whether it’s watching all of the Harry Potter movies in one weekend, playing games, or just hanging out.
One of the great things that happens during the first semester are Hurricane Thursdays. Every Thursday is a different event, which are mainly geared towards getting the freshman involved with things on campus, but are open to every TU student. So far we’ve had events such as First Thursday which was a big activities fair, Pizzas of Tulsa that was put on by RHA so everyone can sample the different pizza places around town, and a Pool Party Fiesta which included live music and Qdoba. Most recently the hall government in Fisher South put on Boxer Bash, which is a dance in your underpants! Everyone dances the night away while their boxers are proudly shown on the outside of their pants. We got to enjoy a DJ while also getting to eat tons of pizza, donuts, and cookies in the shape of boxers!
It’s only been a month of school and I’m so excited to see what the rest of the year brings!
