I Believe In D’Mann

Last week, the university bussed me and a group of my fraternity brothers I to The Matilda Mossman (TU women’s head basketball coach) and Danny Manning (TU men’s head basketball coach) Radio Call-In Shows to a local restaurant. Showing our support for TU athletics is important to us. Eating dinner and talking sports with my brothers also made for a great evening. Shout out to Coach Manning who personally ordered us a cornucopia of appetizers. We’ll be sure to make it to future shows and games to show our support! #BlowCane

Liberty Bowl – Road Trip To Memphis

I know this post is a little delayed; about a month overdue, but if you haven’t heard TU won the 2012 Liberty Bowl! The team, students, fans, and alumni from all over ventured to Memphis for a weekend and New Year to remember. Thanks to the generous donation by alumni and friends of TU, other students and I were able to travel to Memphis on a budget. For only $40, I got a hotel room for two nights, a bowl game ticket, shuttles to and from the game, and shuttle rides to and from Beale Street and for only $25 more, I could have ridden the student bus from Tulsa to Memphis and back. Instead, some of my fraternity brothers and I chose to make this journey in my car.

A quick lunch stop at U.S. Pizza Co. in Little Rock was well worth the drive by itself. Best salad in the U.S. Anyone from Arkansas knows that this place is on point.

Some Really Pretty Lights

We are lucky to have such a vast array of concert venues in Tulsa. From big name super stars, to new and upcoming artists, downtown Tulsa has become a hub for those who love to attend concerts. I myself am a huge country and dubstep fan. Downtown Tulsa is a quick and hassle free 5 minute drive from TU. These concerts not only draw TU students and Tulsans, but students from OU and OSU. I was lucky enough to go to a few shows last week.

Fun Fact: The BOK Center was named the the top venue in the world by the International Association of Venue Managers! This is the place where super stars perform. I’ve bought my tickets for Eric Church fifteen minutes after they went on sale! I can’t wait until December 7th! Excited is an understatement.

Inside Cain’s Ballroom – This is the best pace in the country to watch a concert! There isn’t a bad seat in the entire room. Every ticket is general admission with standing room only. It gets a little crazy to say the least.

Fun Fact: In 1978, historic Cain’s Ballroom was only one of a few venues to host the Sex Pistols in their only American Tour.

So Close, Yet So Far Away

Hello there, let me introduce myself. I’m Jack and I’m a freshman at TU. I’m a petroleum engineer and I’m a little new to this whole blogging thing. I look forward to sharing with you all over this next year and giving a little of my two cents. Sorry if things get confusing but engineers aren’t quite known for their ability to write.

I was born at St. John’s hospital, a whole 2.5 miles from TU. I’ve lived a whopping 3.5 miles from TU my whole life. I went to high school located between those two places of interest, 3 miles from TU. So naturally, when I finally got the opportunity to get out of my parents home and leave Tulsa, I chose to attend The University of Tulsa.

As a high schooler, I never thought I would have stayed so close to home, but I have no regrets. Living close to home is all about what you make of it. I can be as close or as far away from home as I want. In fact, most of my friends that attend universities out of town are back in Tulsa more often than me. There is always the convenience of driving 5 minutes to pick up forgotten things, letting my mom do my laundry, and being able to take my pledge brothers to a good family dinner. Don’t mark TU off your list just because the school is so close to home.

I could ramble on and on about my decision to come to TU but I’ll just hit some of the main points. Have you ever driven through campus? Did you notice how awesome campus is? I mean, the grass is green, there’s fountains, swimming pools, beautiful architecture, and it’s maintained daily by an army of workers. One of my favorite things is just driving visitors, family, and friends through campus. They are always impressed and jealous that I live on such a beautiful campus. I tell my friends that I feel like I live on a country club.

I also chose TU for its petroleum engineering program. My grandfather is a PE from TU in the “good ole days”. Since then, the program has grown, won great respect from employers, and moved into Stephenson Hall, the PE department’s $16.1 million baby. While there are other schools with great PE programs, not many universities offer the perks that TU offers outside of academia. Having a successful D1 football program, an active Greek life, and faculty who strive for the best are just a few of the many perks.

So, don’t cross TU off your list quite yet. Visit campus, talk to some students, and Get Golden!
