Golden Hurricane Athletics

Rachel
Coming from an area with some of the country’s largest universities and biggests sports programs, one of the first questions my family asked me after my decision to attend Tulsa was, “So…is Tulsa any good at sports?”

For those of you who are considering attending TU or have already made the (fantastic!) decision to do so, here are some fun facts about the Tulsa athletic program.

1. The University of Tulsa is the smallest Division 1 school.

2. This season, the Women’s Basketball team received its first NCAA tournament bid, where their first game was against 1-seed Stanford. Tulsa played well and kept Stanford on their toes despite a resulting loss of 72-56.

3. Chris O’Hare brought home gold for the Golden Hurricane last spring in the NCAA Indoor Mile Run, and just this spring broke the NCAA mile record with a 3:52.98 mile time.

4. Tulsa is currently ranked at least top 25 in Men’s Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Women’s Golf, and Softball.

5. Football ended their season by winning the C-USA championship over UCF.

6. Students get free admission to all sporting events!

Tuesday with Tulsa: Golden Moments

Bryce C., a sophomore Energy Management and Finance double major from Dallas, shares some of his favorite Golden Moments from this school year.

After an incredible Liberty Bowl win against a Big 12 school, all the TU students went to Beale Street for New Years Eve.  The TU Alumni Association gave all students a travel package for the bowl game that was hard to resist…for $40, each student got: 2 nights in a hotel in Memphis, free tickets to the Bowl Game, free tickets to the bowl bash the night before in downtown Memphis with free food, and free bus transportation from the hotel to EVERYTHING – we never had to drive.  The entire trip is probably my favorite memory this far while going to TU.  Our hotel was basically sold out to just TU students who went to the bowl game, and it was such a fun trip with all my friends.  This picture is from downtown Memphis on New Years Eve after we beat Iowa State 31-17.

Student Association, our student government, hosts different events each day of Homecoming week.  This past fall, one of the events was a campus-wide color run.  I had never participated in a color run so I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was so much fun.  We were given a route through campus to run, and there were 4 or 5 stations spaced out with people who threw dry, colored paint as you passed by.  At the end, everyone is covered in bright colors.  There was a huge turnout of students, and it was really fun.

The very first football game last season (2012) was an away game at Iowa State. Myself and 3 friends decided that we wanted to road trip up to watch the game, so after the 8 hour drive (and seeing lots of corn fields), we arrived in Ames, Iowa. We basically started wandering through the tailgate lots to see if there were any other TU fans there. We couldn’t find many TU students, but we seemed to make friends with Iowa State fans everywhere we went. One older couple even invited us back to their tailgate spot after the game for dinner, which we accepted and brought some other TU fans with us.

I have a good friend on the football team, and he got us free tickets to the game. When we went to will call to pick them up, the Tulsa representative gave us front row seats because he wanted current students in the front. It was an awesome game, and because we were the loudest TU fans there and in the front row, the Fox Sports camera guy would come film us every time our team scored or held a third down. The picture you see is actually a Tulsa World (Tulsa’s Newspaper) reporter taking pictures of us being filmed. We ended up losing that game to Iowa State, but the 4 of us had an awesome trip…we also got revenge at the Liberty Bowl where we destroyed Iowa State.

I Believe In D’Mann

Jack
Last week, the university bussed me and a group of my fraternity brothers I to The Matilda Mossman (TU women’s head basketball coach) and Danny Manning (TU men’s head basketball coach) Radio Call-In Shows to a local restaurant. Showing our support for TU athletics is important to us. Eating dinner and talking sports with my brothers also made for a great evening. Shout out to Coach Manning who personally ordered us a cornucopia of appetizers. We’ll be sure to make it to future shows and games to show our support! #BlowCane

Liberty Bowl – Road Trip To Memphis

Jack
I know this post is a little delayed; about a month overdue, but if you haven’t heard TU won the 2012 Liberty Bowl! The team, students, fans, and alumni from all over ventured to Memphis for a weekend and New Year to remember. Thanks to the generous donation by alumni and friends of TU, other students and I were able to travel to Memphis on a budget. For only $40, I got a hotel room for two nights, a bowl game ticket, shuttles to and from the game, and shuttle rides to and from Beale Street and for only $25 more, I could have ridden the student bus from Tulsa to Memphis and back. Instead, some of my fraternity brothers and I chose to make this journey in my car.

A quick lunch stop at U.S. Pizza Co. in Little Rock was well worth the drive by itself. Best salad in the U.S. Anyone from Arkansas knows that this place is on point.

Abby and I at the Liberty Bowl pep rally.

We watched the guitar drop as the new year rang in on Beale Street after a big win.

Fun times

After our football team became Conference Champs students were allowed to rush the field and congratulate them in person before we all sang the fight song!

It was fun seeing the student section full during Tulsa Time with all the prospective students. We really want you to come :)

Just a typical TU Saturday…2 Basketball wins (Men beat TCU by 1 pt and the Women won their game).

Former TU Football players who are graduating in December came by and acted as “Security” for our philanthropy event.

New Member Retreat and My First Race

Some fun things have happened recently.  First was the new member retreat for Kappa, (see pictures below).  The second is that I got to participate in a race for rowing called a regatta, but I’ll talk more about that later.

The retreat…first, the car I went in had a very difficult time getting there!  Our GPS led us to a factory and a very creepy small house on a hill.  When we finally got to the house, it was huge and we laughed because we were the second ones there and when other people arrived they said they had gotten lost too.  We also ate a lot, which is one of my favorite things to do!  Then we played a game where we had to guess who our bigs were based on clues. (A big is kind of like a mentor with which new sorority members are provided to help guide them through anything they might have questions about.)  I refused to go first because I am shy and that makes me uncomfortable, but when I heard the clues I knew it was my big.  Next we went upstairs and the seniors talked to us about what it means to be a Kappa, and because it was Kate’s and my birthday, they brought us cupcakes.  Then we got to make up a song about Kappa. We decided to make a song based on Taylor Swift’s song Love Story.  It turned out really cute.  By the end of the night I was really glad that they had this event because it was so fun and it was a great thing to do on my birthday.

The other thing was amazing was the regatta.  It wasn’t exactly a real regatta with medals and things but we raced Kansas in a scrimmage.  Since I am more of a coxswain (the person that steers the boat) I don’t typically race in the boat, but someone got sick and I did get to race.  It was really exciting because based on times our boat won 3rd which would have meddaled if it were a real race.  I also was really excited to spend the whole day with my friends and get to see the experienced rowers.  Because it was parents weekend my parents even got to see me row, which is awesome.  All and all it was a pretty exciting race for me.  I unfortunately don’t have pictures from this so just trust that it was soooo fun :)

Arkansas Game

Andres

I went with the band for my first out of state college football game. It was a great experience. I’ve never been inside a stadium so big and the Arkansas fans were very dedicated to their team and their spirit was astounding. We did not let them outdo us though. Though we were not the full size band we played louder than their band, which outnumbered us at least 10 to 1. I’m so proud to be a Golden Hurricane! Despite the loss the game was great and I’ll remember it for a long time.

Raising Some ‘Cane

If you ask me or any of my friends what are favorite season is, we will respond with the same answer: Football! Tailgating, TU blue and attempting to imitate the pom and cheer routines from the student section are a telltale sign that Fall has arrived once again and the Golden Hurricane is back on the field. 11 am on Saturday marked the start of Tulsa’s first home football game of the season! Other than my killer sunburn that has now resulted in a bunch of awkward tan lines, the game was a success! Next up: another home game versus Nichols State on Saturday. Can’t wait!

It’s Tulsa Time Again!

Hillary
I’m so excited to be back on campus! I had such a fun-filled break, but the highlight was definitely driving all the way from St. Louis to Dallas to attend the Armed Forces Bowl. It was TU vs. BYU in a drama-filled game, and I had a blast! For a really, really low price TU drove us down to the game from Tulsa, paid for us to go to a really nice, fun-filled alumni dinner called the  Bowl Bash (delicious BBQ!), and put us up in a GORGEOUS hotel right in the heart of downtown Dallas! We also got transportation to and from the game and tickets to the game that were basically in the front row. It was so fun!

After the bowl game was over, I couldn’t wait to get back to TU to see all of my friends again! It’s been really great to be back on campus for my last semester (*tear*), and I’m excited to see what the new semester brings! I already really like my classes, I’m training for a half marathon, and I turn 22 this semester. No matter what, it’s bound to be fun! =)

My friends and I at the Armed Forces Bowl in December!
