Greek Life Philanthropy- Hootiefest

One of my favorite parts of Greek life is philanthropy events.  Every fraternity house is in a national alliance with a different organization, which they sponsor dinners and activities to raise money for.  The Chi-Omega chapter sponsors “Hootiefest” to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Our goal was to raise over $6,000, which is enough money to grant one child their wish.

The first activity kicked off November 11th at the Chi-Omega house.  There was an all you can eat dinner- $5 from everyone at the door- that consisted of food from all over Tulsa including Zio’s, Chipotle, Pei Wei, and much more!  The event took many weeks of planning and an entire day to set up, but all the hours of hard work payed off to make a great event!

Tulsa Race for the Cure

Each sorority and fraternity has a special philanthropy they support.  My house’s philanthropy is Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness.  To raise money for the foundation we held a dinner on Monday called Kappasta where we served pasta… obviously! It was really good.  We even got breadsticks from Olive Garden.  Anyway, we sponsored a dodge ball tournament, and a bunch of teams from around campus sign up and play against each other.  It is so  fun!  I had a lot of work to do, but I didn’t want to leave.

These events lead up to the big event… Tulsa’s Race for the Cure, which was held last Saturday.  I did an untimed race, which is fine because I am slow (but I was really proud of myself because I went a lot faster than I thought I would)!  I had a lot of fun and  my sorority sisters were there to run with me!  One of the girls walked with her Grandmother, who is a cancer survivor.  I finished the race just before it began pouring rain, yet I still got soaked.  Here is a picture of us after the race (after it started raining):20130928_095629

Big/ Little Reveal

One of the most exciting things that happens in a sorority is getting a “little sis”.  In my sorority house, we go on things called big/ little dates where all of the potential bigs and  littles go somewhere to eat or just hang out to get to know each other.  One of my favorite nights was game night; we got to play my favorite game called Catch Phrase and we also played a game called heads up.  It is on the iPhone and you should all get it because it is the best game!!!!!  On Sunday evening, the bigs found out who their littles were, and I was beyond excited! :) We had to keep it a secret until the next Sunday, which was really hard. During the week we gave our littles lots of food and a couple of clues to help them figure out who we were.  Although some of the clues are false because it throws them off and it is entertaining to see them try to guess to their bigs are based on false clues.  We made our clues look cute and crafty so it was fun :) Here is an example of my clues on the 2nd day (there were three days).20130925_195535

Then the day came where we got to reveal ourselves to our littles.  It was great! We decorated boxes and Sprang out of them when our littles got there.  It was a fun and  joyous moment.  Here are some of the bigs observing the action before their littles come:20130929_183349

It was a great time, and I am so glad!
