TU dominates WKU 4-1 for first MVC win

The men’s soccer team dominated Western Kentucky 4-1 on Friday at Hurricane Track and Soccer Stadium.

Junior Ryan Pore scored three goals to lead the Golden Hurricane to its first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season. The win was also Tulsa’s first over Western Kentucky since the Hilltoppers joined MVC in 2000.
Western Kentucky struck first after just 2:18 of play. Steven Medlock lobbed a long pass down the field. TU goalie Brad Lowyns came out to intercept the pass, but WKU’s Alex Sheikh beat him to the ball and put it in the empty net.

Pore’s tied the game with his first goal in the 19th minute. He blasted a shot towards the goal. It deflected off a WKU defender and went into the net. TU”s

Lawson Vaughn earned an assist on the play.
Neither team was able to net another goal before halftime, and the score remained 1-1. TU out shot the Hilltoppers 18-5 in the first half. Western Kentucky’s Kyle Schroeder had six of his eight saves before halftime.

TU came out firing in the second half. Pore gave the Golden Hurricane the lead for good with two goals in a four-minute span. His goal in the 57th minute, off assists from Matt Wiley and Michael Clarke, made the score 2-1. In the 61st minute, Pore took a pass from Lawson Vaughn on the left side and sent the ball into the left side of the net to increase the lead to 3-1.

Junior Daniel Wasson added another goal for the Golden Hurricane in the 76th minute, knocking in a free kick. It was Wasson’s third goal of the season.
Pore’s hat trick was the third of his career, and upped his goal total to 10 on the season.

Golden Hurricane tallies, drops Vandy 4-2

TU bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Vanderbilt 4-2 on Sunday at Hurricane Track and Soccer Stadium.

Junior Ryan Pore scored two goals, giving him five in the last two games and increasing his season total to 12. Lawson Vaughn and Daniel Wasson also scored for TU.

The Golden Hurricane came out blaz-ing. Pore scored just 34 seconds into the contest on an assist from Wasson. Pore took the ball down the right side and shot the ball into the top left corner of the net, giving TU a 1-0 lead.

Vanderbilt struck right back, how-ever. Justin Moreland headed in a corner kick to tie the game in the 21st minute. The Commodores took the lead nine minutes later when Josh Medcalf scored. Vanderbilt took the 2-1 lead into halftime.

Vanderbilt’s defense played tough, keeping the Golden Hurricane from scor-ing after Pore’s early goal for much of the game. Commodore goalie Kenny Schoeni had eight saves in the game.

TU took control in the 66th minute, when Lawson Vaughn scored his first goal of the season. Pore added his second goal of the game in the 75th minute.
A few minutes after TU took the lead, Vanderbilt’s Brady Hyde committed a hard foul and was given a red card. TU took advantage of the one-man advantage, as Wasson scored in the 85th minute to seal the victory.

The win improved TU to 11-3-1 overall and 6-0-1 in MVC games played at Hurricane Track and Soccer Stadium. TU is now 3-0 in home games against Vanderbilt, and the Golden Hurricane lead the overall series 5-1-1. Sunday also marked TU’s first back-to-back conference wins this season.

The Golden Hurricane is now 6-3-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in MVC play. TU plays at SMU on Friday.
