Nara Café

Nara Café is a “chill” hookah bar and restaurant that was opened two-and-a-half months ago by a group of friends from the Middle East.

The Café offers a calm environment with a separate dining area and smoking lounge. There are over 20 flavors of sheesha (tobacco) available, ranging from $12.99 for basic flavors to $27.99 for master blends. Each hookah pipe comes with disposable mouthpieces for each person.

Some fun flavors include Orgasm, Sixty-Nine and Exotic Tequila Sunrise. I recommend Fantasy and Bubble Gum for hookah beginners.

Evie Crow, waitress, said, “Everyone that comes in here is so relaxed. If you’re uptight, it’s probably not the place for you.”

Nara Café is located on 48th and Memorial. It is open Monday–Thursday until 12 a.m. and Friday–Sunday until 2 a.m.

Star Avenue Hookah Lounge

Friday night a little after 11, I pulled into the parking lot of Star Avenue Hookah Lounge at 11th Street and Delaware Avenue. Armed with a friend, I approached the door cautiously—I had never been to a hookah bar before.

Concerns evaporated as we stepped inside to a calm and classy atmosphere complete with live music, leather couches and dimmed lighting. A friendly owner quickly offered us a menu and pointed out the lounge’s amenities, like two flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Boasting over 80 flavors of tobacco, the lounge offers everything from Apricot to Jasmine to Strawberry Margarita to Watermelon Mint.

There is a minimum $10 charge per customer. If two friends want to share one hookah ($12.99), it will cost them $20. However, customers may spend the remaining $7.01 on drinks such as coffee, tea, red bull, Gatorade, etc. With a group of five or more, for an extra $5 per person, patrons may enjoy the privilege of a private room as a VIP customer.

Star Avenue operates from 6 p.m.–1 a.m. Monday–Thursday, 6 p.m.–2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 6–11 p.m. Sunday. Visit within the next four weeks and receive $2 off hookah with a TU student ID.
