Cross-country senior takes individual championship

University of Tulsa senior John Beattie repeated last year’s performance as the individual champion at the Conference USA Cross- Country Championship meet Saturday.

The men’s team finished in second place and the women’s team placed fourth overall.

The men’s team was edged out by the University of Texas, El Paso for the team title.

Junior Lewis Timmins placed third overall and senior Kyle Dekker finished fifth to round out the Golden Hurricane’s three all-C-USA First Team selections.

Sophomore Justin Duncan finished 10th, while junior Mark Davidson finished 13th and freshman Chris O’Hare placed 14th to earn second team all-conference selections.

Sophomore Carl Stones was named to the all-C-USA Third Team with a 16th-place finish in the championships.

The women’s team finished in fourth place with 90 points behind Southern Methodist University (28 points), UTEP (40) and Rice University (82).

The Golden Hurricane was led by junior Melanie Cleland, who came in sixth place overall to earn all-C-USA First Team honors.

Freshman Paula Whiting placed 11th to make the all-conference second team and freshman Jaclyn Rollins finished 15th to earn third team honors at the championships.

Cross-country will be back in action Nov. 14 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo.
