“Sainthood” strengthens fanhood

Tegan and Sara’s sixth album is out. It is called “Sainthood.”
It may be well-nigh impossible for me to give a bad review of a Tegan and Sara album, but fortunately, I do not have a reason to do so.
Addictive and quirky as Canadian things often are, this album displays the twins in a return of-sorts to a sometimes raucous, sometimes contemplative, but overall fun sound. They were generally known for this before their last album, “The Con,” on which they got just a little bit more emotional than usual.
With “Sainthood,” they are back to delivering the goods through some quite danceable tunes, frequently rife with the infectious choruses and “I do not know what that means” kind of lyrics that first made them famous. Examples include “we’re not ready for hell, hell no, for hell, hell no,” and something about a “paperback head.”
This is not to say that they have completely abandoned sentimentality. While those themes take a bit of a backseat, the “Hey, I can relate to that” songs of passion and love are among the best they have ever done.
So with all these old familiar traits recycled into “Sainthood,” it should go without saying that if you did not like the duo before, this album is not apt to change your mind.
Of course, that statement works both ways.
Whether you mostly dig their fast, catchy rock songs or their quieter, more affecting pieces, there are enough of both to keep anyone happy.
