Hangover Helpers

Mary Jessup, Columnist

10.Water: Drink water all of the time—before, during and after drinks.

9. Temperance: There is no good reason to get completely smashed. Enjoy time with friends, but make sure you can remember it the next morning.

8. Avoid acetaminophen. Tylenol, NyQuil and other medications contain the pain reliever acetaminophen. That might sound like a great cure for a hangover, but acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver, the organ that probably just had a rough night. So let it rest!

7. Rest: Sleep is the best way for a body to recuperate (just do not fall asleep while still intoxicated). Plan ahead and do not drink the night before an important early morning (or a deadline for a Collegian article).

6. Food: If nauseous, try to eat something that will help maintain the body’s level of electrolytes. Eggs prepared in various ways have been said to help, if only in a morale-boosting sort of way.

5. Myths: While there is no cure for a hangover, myths have been perpetuated for as long as alcohol has existed. Things like artichokes, bacon or super-vitamins have long been said to help. They do not, at least in any measurable physical sense.

4. No Hair of the Dog: Some myths might be harmless to indulge, but not this one. If alcohol is the cause of a hangover, how could it also hold a cure? More booze will only serve to hold off the inevitable, and make the hangover worse when it finally drops.

3. Patience: Just like a cold, there is no cure. Wait it out and treat the symptoms. Use this down time to do something productive. Maybe finish some homework or write a list of life goals. Let it serve as a lesson for the next time you think a keg stand is a good idea.

2. Distractions: The symptoms of a hangover sometimes are not the most conducive to productivity. If there is no way to fall asleep for a little longer, pop in a movie that requires as little thought as possible. After the mental break, maybe re-approach the productivity bit.

1. Opt out: The only sure way to avoid a hangover is not to drink. There are plenty of ways to have a good time on an active campus with so much to do, right in the middle of a bustling city. Do not let “college” be an excuse to compromise your health.
