Men’s soccer wins 2009 C-USA tournament championship
Staff Report,
The 12th-ranked Tulsa men’s soccer team claimed its third straight Conference USA Championship and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
The team pulled off a 3-0 win over Marshall University at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane, which also claimed the C-USA regular season title with a 6-1-1 mark, moved to 13-4-2 on the season while the Thundering Herd fell to 10-7-2 overall.
“Obviously, we are excited to win the conference championship,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We set that as a team goal earlier this year and we accomplished it. We knew Marshall could score some goals, but we talked about playing one possession at a time and I think we did that today.”
“We made some mental mistakes early in the second half that gave Marshall the momentum and put ourselves under pressure, but we fought through it. We were confident, but we weren’t over-confident.”
Justin Chavez put the Golden Hurricane on the board after just 2:45 off a corner kick taken by Chris Taylor to take an early lead.
Austin Neil made the score 2-0 with his rebound goal off a shot taken by Taylor.
Jose Parada scored the only goal in the final 76 minutes off a combination from Ashley McInnes to Matt Boullt to Parada for the goal.
Kilian Poeschk, Neil and Taylor all attempted three shots for the Golden Hurricane, and Andy Aguilar, who logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up six saves.
For their efforts, Neil, McInnes, Taylor and Aguilar were named to the C-USA All-Tournament team.
