Skills You Learn

Program Core
The core of the program focuses on education, facilitation and experiential learning methodologies distributed between three specific areas:

  • Technical Skills – How to paddle and portage a canoe, pack a backpack, hike, camp in the winter, mountain bike repair, care of equipment, etc.

  • Interpersonal Skills – How to make participants feel like a team, deal with conflict and conduct themselves as safely as possible.

  • Problem-solving Skills – How to deal with situations that arise on the trail, the river or the lake; how to exercise experience-based judgment.

All activities reflect our commitment to the development of interpersonal and leadership skills such as group process, conflict resolution, program planning, a practical perspective on individual roles and group development; communication and appropriate feedback, a broad understanding of administrative issues, and an introduction to technical skills such as backpacking, canoeing, rock-climbing and traditional wall climbing, caving, mountain biking, low and high level challenge courses, and wilderness emergency preparedness.

A leader is best, when people barely know that he exists,
Not so good when people obey and acclaim him;
Worse when they despise him, fail to honor people, they fail to honor you;
But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled
They will as say, "We did this ourselves." --Lao Tzu
